Dear Friends,
Welcome to Grandview High School, a partnership between Seeds of Health, Inc., a non-profit social service agency, and Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). The Grandview High School, located at 1445 South 32nd Street, opened its doors in 1987 with two teachers, 25 students and a mission to provide school-age parents and other at-risk students the opportunity to finish their high school education in a supportive environment. Since then, the school has been continuously developing programs to meet the special needs of its students. Today, more than 240 students from all areas of Milwaukee attend Grandview High School.
A distinctive characteristic of Grandview is its support services, which address the specific concerns that may be interfering with a student’s academic success. Our school-based social work staff provides case management, counseling, day care coordination assistance, regular attendance reinforcement, home visits, and referrals to help students and their families cope with crisis situations and other advocacy and support services. Services are provided on site by two social workers and a principal. A full-time guidance counselor also works with students on developing their vocational path.
With school-age parents and parents-to-be comprising one-third of our enrollment, many students benefit from the on-site Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program, which provides health and nutrition education to all pregnant students, teenage parents and their children up to age five. The homebound instruction program allows students who give birth during the school year the opportunity to adjust to parenthood and to continue their education at the same time.
Grandview High School’s graduation rate has consistently exceeded 90 percent since it opened. Many graduates continue their education at colleges or trade schools and go on to undertake successful careers in law enforcement, health care, business and many other vocations.
The curriculum at Grandview meets the MPS requirements for high school graduation with courses offered in a wide variety of disciplines, including English, mathematics, social studies, science, family and consumer education, and fine arts. In addition to the core curriculum, students have the opportunity to participate in non-traditional education programs that help them develop workplace skills. The programs include journalism, consumer economics, entrepreneurial studies and community service.
Other courses offered teach students important life skills related to parenting, child development, nutrition, emotional and physical health, critical thinking, problem solving and career options. Extracurricular activities include team sports, student council and community service projects.
Grandview High School also offers a small class size of 18 students per teacher. This provides an opportunity for small group instruction in a block schedule, which allows for active student participation. The teacher/student mentorship program, which partners students with faculty for one-on-one direction and support, ensures that each student receives individual attention daily.
